Overview

The academies at Hialeah High School strive to inform students of the professional opportunities available in various academic areas of study. They also provide comprehensive instruction to prepare students for immediate entry-level positions and/or college preparation for potential careers.

Objectives
  • Offer preparation for the Florida Gold Seal Scholarship
  • Prepare students for entry to post-secondary education
  • Develop the leadership skills essential for success
  • Help build up the competencies for certification examinations

  • Prepare students for licensing through academic and technical examinations
  • Help students attain competencies for certification examinations
  • Offer students clinical learning experiences
  • Provide students with professional experience opportunities through work experience, internships, job shadowing, and mentoring programs
  • Expose students to the latest technology in all academy areas

SENIOR PROJECT- Government/Economics Classes

*Chapter I will include a brief 2-3 page review of the literature about the student's career choice including; job preparation requirements, salary, job description, and employment possibilies, and personal internship/experience reflections if appropriate. The Chapter will include a bibliography and a 1 page FCAT Writes Persuasive Essay persuading the reader why the career choice was selected (Total pages-5 maximum).

*Chapter II will include a 3-4 page review of the literature (including some reference to contrasting points) regarding a pertinent timely and possibly controversial issue regarding their selected career. Some examples if these issues include: vouchers, FCAT Testing, standardized testing, inclusion, bilingual education and much more for education; Cloning, stem cell research, abortion adnd life issues, health care, and more for medical fields; alternative fuels, future energy sources, building construction regarding hurricanes, architectural designs (hurricane resistance, New York memorials) and others for engineering; and other similar key current issuesrelating to the student's career. The chapter will then include a 1 page FCAT Writes Persuasive Essay Deliniating the students view on the issue based on the research. The total pages for Chapter II including the bibliography will be 5 at the maximum. Thus the entire written research paper and FCAT Persuasive essays/analysis will total a mere 10 pages.

**Oral Presentation-each student will present a 5-6 minute Power Point Presentation with approximately 7 slides and a career related collage or poster. The slides will include the following: 1.) Cover page with a career related graphic and message; 2.) Brief personal resume by the student; 3.) Synopsis of Chapter I; 4.) Synopsis of Chapter II; 5.) Reasons for choosing career and side of particular issue; 6.) Highlights of internship or Career Experiences;
7.) Summation.

*The research paper and oral presentation should count for approximately 10 grades during the nine weeks, it's required. Completion of the Senior Project is a prerequisite for the SENIOR Academy Walk. It could also be graded by the student's respective Language Arts insructors for grammar, structure, and syntax (especially the FCAT Writing segment).
